BWI affiliate GSTU will hold workshops at Lafarge-Holcim in the Chekka District, Northern Lebanon .
Ugandan union UBCCEAWU will mark 28 April with a safety awareness raising campaign at the Lafarge-Holcim Hilma Cement Plant. The BWI affiliate hopes the action will secure safety improvements at the site.
For 28 April Kenyan unions affiliated to BWI – KUPRIPUPA, UNRISK, KBCTFIEA, KQMWU – will be running a work safety campaign with the aim of forming workplace safety committees.
Campaigning and recruitment are the key themes of the 28 April workplace accident awareness campaigns led by unions SINTICIM and SINTAF – Mozambique affiliates of the global construction union federation BWI.
BWI affiliated trade unions CLAWUZ, GAPWUZ, ZCATWU and ZEWU will be running OHS awareness campaigns in Gweru and Harare, Zimbabwe.
Between 28 – 30 April construction unknown and BWI affiliate Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (MANWU) will be running a workplace campaign to strengthen OSH Programmes between MANWU and all stakeholders. In particular MANWU will campaign for the Ministry of Labour to develop a national employee wellness policy and finalise an occupational safety and health policy
The union will develop campaign materials for importance of Employee wellness policy and finalisation of the OHS Policy.
Construction union and BWI affiliate Construction, Metal and Employees Union (CMWEU) has announced its plans to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day.
The union’s plan is to “Sensitise the workers on difference between general checkup and work related medical checkup and what protection exist in the law.
“Acquire expert support, Occupational Health Physician to educate workers on Occupational diseases and long-term effects on the livelihood of the worker.”
And “Visibility actions to educate workers on ‘UNIONS MAKE SAFE WORK’”
The activity will take place in Rose Hill – Mauritius . It is targeted at CMWEU Unions leaders, OHS committee members, government and the public and it is hoped the outcome will be that “Workers become fully aware of the occupational diseases and long-term effects and how best to prevent from such. Distribution of pamphlets and other printed materials on work sites and sensitization campaign through meeting on work sites.”
Wales TUC is to produce a short animation for Workers’ Memorial Day, 28 April. The union body will be launching it digitally, along with a pre-recorded item from the First Minister. The animation will focus on the difference that health and safety reps can make at work.
