On International Workers’ Memorial Day, we remember the countless workers who have lost their lives due to workplace accidents and occupational diseases. This day is not only about remembrance—it is about action. While significant progress has been made in reducing physical workplace hazards, psychosocial risks—such as work-related stress, burnout, harassment, and job insecurity—remain among the most prevalent and least regulated occupational hazards in Europe. These risks undermine both workers’ health and workplace productivity, and their prevention must become a priority.

This event will bring together experts, policymakers, and trade union representatives to shed light on the latest data on work-related psychosocial risks, their economic and social costs, and the pressing need for stronger regulatory action at the EU level. We will also launch several new ETUI publications, providing in-depth insights into the current landscape of psychosocial risks and the necessary steps to prevent and eliminate these hazards from European workplaces.

Following the publications launch, a high-level roundtable discussion will engage key stakeholders—from trade unions, policymakers, and researchers—to debate the next steps towards a robust EU directive on psychosocial risks. This discussion will be a critical opportunity to shape the future of occupational health and safety, ensuring that mental well-being is given the same priority as physical safety in the workplace.

USA: This Workers’ Memorial Day, report hazards says postal workers’ union

Each year, on April 28, we observe Workers’ Memorial Day. On this day, the labor movement remembers workers killed or injured on the job and vows to continue the fight for strong safety and health protections in the workplace. Without workers standing together and fighting for our safety, we would not enjoy the protections from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and our union contract.

This Workers’ Memorial Day, we are calling on our members to take part in collective action to make sure our workplaces are clean, safe, and healthy! On April 28, fill out and file a PS Form 1767 – Report of Hazard, Unsafe Condition or Practice. Whether something small like sticky floors, or a persistent problem such as a toxic workplace, stand up with your co-workers to shine a light on the hazards in your workplace. If we don’t look out for each other, no one else will.

How a PS Form 1767 Works:

  • To report a hazard, find and fill out the PS Form 1767. These must be readily available to you. If it is not, you can fi nd a form on apwu.org.
  • APWU recommends that you utilize the 4-copy NCR form provided by the USPS in your workplace. This way you can see what actions were completed or ignored.
  • File a report of the condition on PS Form 1767 with the immediate supervisor and request an inspection of the condition.

The immediate supervisor must promptly (within the tour of duty): Investigate the alleged condition; Initiate immediate corrective action; Record actions or recommendations on the PS Form 1767; Forward the original PS Form 1767 and one copy to the next appropriate level of management (approving official); Give the employee a copy signed by the supervisor as a receipt; Immediately forward the third copy to the facility safety coordinator. If the hazard is not fixed within 7 days, you can file a grievance to ensure action is taken.

Poland: Digitalisation and artificial intelligence – a new era of work [CIOP]

On 28 April, Poland observes the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This year’s theme is: Digitalisation and artificial intelligence – a new era of work

Modern technologies are transforming our workplaces — influencing work organisation, productivity, and also the safety and health of workers. This year, at the initiative of the International Labour Organization, we are looking into the role of artificial intelligence, machine learning, exoskeletons, the Internet of Things, virtual and augmented reality, as well as the challenges associated with remote work and digital platforms.

How can we leverage innovation to improve safety while minimising risks? What changes lie ahead in the coming years? We will seek answers to these questions during the observance, with more details available at:

Global: Theme for International Workers’ Memorial Day/Day of Mourning, 28 April 2025

Dear colleagues,

In 2025, ITUC is proposing continuing the 28 April theme of Occupational health and safety: A fundamental right at work. This year, there will be an explicit additional focus on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and digitisation on occupational health and safety.

Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be used to mitigate monotonous work, AI at work is increasing work intensification, monitoring and surveillance, generating negative impacts on mental and physical wellbeing, as workers experience the extreme pressure of constant, real-time micromanagement and automated assessment. In the coming months, ITUC will provide related resources and social media assets. Meanwhile, to give you some overall ideas, we are attaching a short article produced by our expert Rory O’Neill.

Global: Tema del Día Internacional de la Memoria de los Trabajadores/Día de Duelo, 28 de abril de 2025

Estimados/estimadas colegas,

En 2025, la CSI propone continuar con el tema del 28 de abril: “Salud y seguridad en el trabajo: Un derecho fundamental en el trabajo”.

Este año, habrá un enfoque adicional explícito sobre el impacto de la inteligencia artificial (IA) y la digitalización en la salud y la seguridad en el trabajo.

Aunque la inteligencia artificial puede utilizarse para mitigar el trabajo monótono, en el contexto laboral, la IA está aumentando la intensificación del trabajo, la supervisión y la vigilancia, generando impactos negativos en el bienestar mental y físico sobre los trabajadores al sentir la presión extrema de la microgestión constante en tiempo real y la evaluación automatizada.

En los próximos meses, la CSI proporcionará recursos relacionados y materiales para las redes sociales. Mientras tanto, adjuntamos un breve artículo elaborado por nuestro experto Rory O’Neill, el cual podrá darles unas ideas generales iniciales.

Philippines: BWI and ADB hold inspection of Philippine railway project amid sweltering 48 degree heat

In the week of Workers’ Memorial Day, BWI and one of its Philippine affiliates, the National Union of Building and Construction Workers (NUBCW), conducted a joint inspection with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) of the Malalos-Clark Railway Project. The site visits occurred during the country’s warmest season, with temperatures reaching up to 47.7 degrees. This prompted thorough discussions on procedures for working in extreme heat, the necessity of work stoppages when temperatures become hazardous, and the adequacy of provided living accommodations and resting areas in protecting workers from heat stress.

The mission primarily focused on reviewing construction activities and applying ADB labour rights commitments to the ILO core labor standards and national regulations. Safeguard policy commitments on health and safety were emphasised to support the implementation of the project’s Environmental and Social Performance (ESP), defining roles and responsibilities regarding accommodation, occupational health and safety (OHS), and working conditions to ensure alignment with expectations from the Client, BWI, and the bank perspectives.

The three-day mission concluded with a training session at the ADB Headquarters, encompassing shared lessons learned, best practices, and knowledge on labour practices and safeguarding mechanisms. Participants included contractors from different project packages, as well as representatives of clients and key contractors for ADB projects within the Philippines. Observations from the site visits will be disseminated to other projects as examples of best practices. Simultaneously, issues identified will be addressed by the bank as part of corrective action plans formulated following the mission.

Tanzania: Enough of work-related deaths!

Fifteen participants, including five women, from three BWI affiliates in Tanzania (TAMICO, TUICO, and TPAWU), as well as representatives from the Association of Tanzania Employers and the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA), attended and participated in a two-day tripartite consultative meeting held in Tanzania on 29-30 April 2024.

Participants highlighted the challenges surrounding occupational health and safety (OHS) in workplaces, including the existence of new hazards and diseases, the lack of employer-provided personal protective equipment, and other contraventions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 5 of 2003 (OHS Act).

The unions also delved into BWI’s “Enough is Enough campaign” to mark this year’s International Workers’ Memorial Day.” The campaign sought to raise awareness on poor OHS standards in various industries and empower affiliates to end negligent deaths and injuries in workplaces. Bonface Nkakatisi,

TUICO General Secretary, stressed the need to have a strong voice in defending workers’ rights and ensuring the safety and health of workers in the BWI sectors, protecting them against workplace hazards. He also underscored the need to enforce the implementation of the OHS Act and encouraged unions to work with TUCTA to ensure that the national law reflects workers’ concerns and needs.
