Bangladesh: Building and wood workers’ union federation BWI announces 28 April plans

Global building unions’ federation BWI has announced the 28 April plans of its Bangladesh affiliates.

BSBWWF, will hold a worker safety and  Covid-19 awareness meeting for Metro Rail Workers in Dhaka. Also in Dhaka, BBWWF, will hold a health and safety sensitisation program.

South Asia: Multiple activities planned for International Workers’ Memorial Day

Building Wood Workers’ International (BWI) affiliates in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh have planned a wide range of activities to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day.  Those activities will  include workshops, roadshows, meetings, candlelight vigils, training, press events, seminars, silicosis screening a mega health camp and a human chain.

INDIA

BMS In Gujarat one-day workshop on occupational health and safety will be held in association with the employer’s association and the Government along with a Road show on construction  workers safety and health issues on 28th April.

CFBWU Workers’ awareness meeting on occupational health and safety followed by a candlelight vigil.

INCWF Commemoration at the Lafarge Holcim plant in Chhattisgarh and 28 April commemoration at selected other cement plants across the country.

CLU Health and Safety Training Workshop for District-level and second line leadership in Patna, Bihar State.

AHBWU Mega Health Camp (focusing on stone quarry and construction workers) including screening for silicosis.

TKTMS Workers rally and press meeting in Dharampuri District, Tamil Nadu. Over 1,000 workers are expected to participate. Victims and affected families shall also share experiences at the press meeting.

MAMU Meeting with Workers on health and safety awareness in East Delhi.

PAKISTAN

ACEEU Awareness seminar on safety practices and possible hazards at worksites for construction workers in cooperation with selected employers.

PFBWW Occupational health and safety awareness for union members and local union leadership of the Tarbela T4 project.

NEPAL

NAC Unions are planning specific site level actions with  details to follow.

BANGLADESH

BBWWF Workers’ rally and occupational health and safety awareness in Dhaka (including Metro workers) and the Khulna Districts.

Bangladesh: 28 April demonstrations and signature campaign to seek justice

In Bangladesh, BBWWF and BSBWWF will organise a demonstration at Khulna district headquarters seeking fair compensation for the victims’ and  families of Mongla cement factory collapse, followed by a submission of a  memorandum to the District Collector*

* The two affiliates in Bangladesh have launched a signature campaign in support of union petition to improve working conditions at the workplace. On 1st May 2015 they shall submit this petition to the Government of Bangladesh at the national capital Dhaka and this shall be followed by a Press Conference.

Unions do not forget Rana Plaza and fight for new rights in Bangladesh

Bangladeshi unions will mobilise this year with a week of events, which will include meetings on compensation and rehabilitation for Rana Plaza victim workers, a commemoration of the tragedy on April 24th both with OSHE as a lead organiser, a tripartite seminar on the 26th and a joint demonstration of the National Labour Rights and Safety Alliance on the 28th April.

The demo will be calling for immediate ratification of key ILO Conventions on OSH by Bangladesh namely C187 (Promotional Framework for OSH Convention, 2006), C155 (Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981) and C167 (Safety and Health in Construction).

The demo is a joint endeavour by the Bangladesh Free Trade Unions Congress (BFTUC), the National Alliance of Construction Workers Safety, Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE), Federation of Garments Workers (FGW), Bangladesh Building and Workers Federation (BBWWF), Labour at Informal Economy (LIE), Rana Plaza Accident Victims Network and Tazreen Fashions Accident Victim Network.

The Bangladesh Labour Federation -BLF will Observe 28 ICD 2015 in Dhaka organising a discussion meeting on 28 April 3.30 PM. BLF President & General Secretary & BLF Members ,activists, organisers, educators as well as the women’s & youth wings will be present in the event.
