Azerbaijan: Construction unions join call for ILO to recognise health and safety as a fundamental right
As part of BWI’s campaign to persuade the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to recognise occupational health and safety as a fundamental right, the Azerbaijan Building and Construction Workers Union (Ishaat-IS) has signed joint declarations with two different construction companies in Azerbaijan on the importance of safe and healthy workplaces.
A week before this year’s International Workers’ Memorial Day on 28 April, more than 70 declarations have already been signed both by trade unions and employers worldwide.

Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Most don’t die of mystery ailments, or in tragic “accidents”. They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn’t that important a priority. International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) 28 April commemorates those workers.
This year’s event is made even more poignant due to the work-related loss of life due to the COVID Pandemic.
