International Workers’ Memorial Day, 28 April 2018 – Theme announcement

The ITUC is proposing a general theme for International Workers’ Memorial Day, 28 April 2018, of ‘Organized workplaces are safer workplaces’. Variants on this could include ‘Unions make workplaces safer and healthier’ and ‘Union organization saves lives’.

The ITUC will developing resources in the coming weeks to support preparation of campaign materials. To assist with this we are seeking evidence of union action leading to workplace, legislative or sectoral improvements, and the human and economic payoff from this protective action. Please send details to ITUC Health and Safety Adviser, Rory O’Neill at editor@hazards.org

Updates to the dedicated www.28april.org webpages will start as materials, activities and events are confirmed.

Affiliates are of course free to adapt or change the theme to suit local priorities.

Yours Sincerely,

Sharan Burrow

Britain: What are you planning for Workers’ Memorial Day?

The TUC is going to start listing events for the 28 April 2018 Workers’ Memorial Day. The theme is “Unionised workplaces are safer workplaces.” The national union body is urging organisation to send details of all local, regional or national events to be included on the online listing. According to the TUC: “As Workers’ Memorial Day is on a Saturday this year it may be that some workplaces will aim to have the two-minutes’ silence or other event on Friday 27 April. However other events should still be scheduled for 28 April.”

Malta: 28 April marked with a union conference on workplace carcinogens

On 28 April 2017, Malta’s main trade union, the General Workers Union (GWU), held the conference “Together to Eliminate Carcinogens from the place of work” in collaboration with the ETUI.

The topic, the date and the venue were not selected by chance, with 28 April being the World Day on Safety and Health at Work and with occupational cancers the No. 1 cause of work-related deaths in Europe. Malta currently holds the presidency of the European Union (EU). More than a hundred participants took part in the debates, including many unionists, labour inspectors, universities and the official Maltese team tasked by the European Council with negotiating with the European Parliament and the European Commission on the revision of the directive on carcinogens or mutagens at work.
