India: Silicosis victims mourned in Gujarat, India

Today we observed 28 April – International Workers Memorial Day at Khambhat to mourn 25 silicosis victims. This is a new record of numbers of deaths in recent past. Among these 25, there are two pairs of Mother & son.One of the victims Ajay Fakir Machhi was on y 16 when he died last October. His mother Ramilaben (40) could not held back her tears rolling down while garlanding his photo. 10 Year old Sanjay lost his mother last year.He travelled all the way from Navapaura near Anklav to pay homage to her mother He had lost his father Mukeshbhai in 2011. Ajit Parmar lost his brother and Mother at two month interval during 2014. Among 25, 6 were women and 19 male. 14 (60%) were minority.

Serbia: Long-term investment on health and safety – guaranteed success for SSPS

The Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Issues, Directorate for Occupational Health and Safety of the Republic of Serbia has organized in cooperation with social partners a competition for giving National awards in the field of occupational health and safety. The goal of the competition was to promote the field of OHS and to influence the awareness of employers and employees in order to constantly reduce the number of occupational accidents and professional illnesses. This year, the Plaque 28 April, was awarded to BWI affiliate the Autonomous Trade Union of Road Maintenance Workers of Serbia, SSPS, for all the years of achievements and work in this area. More

Several organisations, including the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities, the Center for Construction Research and Training, the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, NENYCOSH, the National Council on Occupational Safety and Health and Global Worker Watch have compiled a regularly updated global listing of worker deaths.

The same organisations have also have compiled the largest open-access data set of individual workplace fatalities collected in the United States to date.

Several organisations, including the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities, the Center for Construction Research and Training, the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, NENYCOSH, the National Council on Occupational Safety and Health and Global Worker Watch have compiled the largest open-access data set of individual workplace fatalities collected in the United States to date.

Also published is a listing of the details of 1,600  of the approximately 4,000-5,000 workers who die every year from a work-related injury in the United States.

Congress, alongside trade unions around the world, has for many years celebrated Workers’ Memorial Day on April 28th. The Health & Safety Committee of Congress has, in recent years, called for official government recognition of this important memorial. It is therefore significant that our marking of the day in 2015 will be the first time such official backing has been given.  More

New Zealand: Workers’ Memorial Day a call to action for leaders

Workers’ Memorial Day (April 28th) is a powerful reminder to people in positions of influence and power about their vital role in fostering safe and healthy workplaces, says the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum.

More than 287 work-related deaths have been reported to WorkSafe since 2010. “But the actual death toll is much higher because that figure doesn’t include deaths from work-related road crashes, occupational illnesses or maritime or aviation deaths,” says Forum Acting Executive Director Frances Martin.

More
