Kenya construction union KUPRIPUPA will work to  raise awareness of workplace hazards and their effects to members; plant trees in commemoration of IWMD; and lastly, recruit and organise workers around the importance of understanding, preserving, and pushing for improved occupational health and safety conditions in the workplace.

Kenya: The Printing, paper manufacturer, pulp and packaging workers union (KUPRIPUPA) held a campaign to commemorate #iwmd22 on 28 April at various work places in Nairobi.

Kenya: Quarry and Mine workers’ union (KQMWU) held the #IWMD22 campaign at Mombasa cement with emphasis on OHS. The commemoration was also done by planting trees at the company to remember workers who have died in the course of work.

During a work place visit at the Kenol-Sagana-Marua road project in Kenya, members of KBCTFIEU campaigned for better workplace health and safety as part of BWI’s global commemoration of International Workers’ Memorial Day. Kenyan BWI affiliate  KUPRIPUPA has plans for 28 April that include safety meetings, empowering workers on labour law, developing negotiation skills, campaigning and lobbying for safety awareness.

In a special show about how the Covid-19 response is affecting working people in public transport, ITF urban transport director Alana Dave has spoken to Dan Mihadi.

Dan Mihadi is the general secretary of the Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (TAWU), Kenya, and he explains how daily life has changed in Nairobi and the challenges face by informal and formal public transport workers in his union.

But he has hope for the future: “We are demanding that this crisis leads to public transport coming into public hands, providing decent jobs, and training. This is an opportunity to make things better for working people,” he said.

As part of the ITF’s Our Public Transport programme, a statement and set of demands has been published in response to Covid-19, and a joint statement with employers.

Kenya: 28 April safety campaign to organise printing works in Nairobi

BWI Kenya affiliates (KUPRIPUPA, KQMWU, UNRISK and KBCTFIEU) organized a workplace campaign at Inter label printing industry in Nairobi on 25th April to sensitize the workers on health and safety and strengthen the OHS committee.

In Burkina Faso  FTBBF union activists will engage in dialogue and health and safety management and participation training with companies on 27 and 28  April.

In Côte d’Ivoire SYNASODEFOR union health and safety meetings and training will be held at the SinoHydro construction project between 27 and 29 April.

In Gabon UTBTPBSP union activists will engage in dialogue and health and safety management and participation training with companies on 27 and 28  April.

In Ghana Timber and Woodworkers’ Union (TWU) activists will engage in dialogue and health and safety management and participation training with companies on 27 and 28  April.

In Kenya  KUPRIPUPA union activists will engage in dialogue and health and safety management and participation training with companies on 27 and 28  April.

Mauritius To mark 28 April the Mauritius Trade Union Congress (MTUC) is holding a one day reflection on ‘Awareness of occupational safety and health issues in the workplace and the contribution of trade unions in the prevention of accidents and ill health at work’ at the Emmanuel Anquetil Labour Centre, MTUC Office, GRNW, Port Louis, Mauritius on Monday 27th April 2015. Delegates from affiliates of MTUC and from other Confederations including that of Council of Trade Unions (CDS) will participate. Opening ceremony at 9.30 a.m will be attended by the Minister of Labour Industrial relations and Employment.

Also: CMWEU  plans to create awareness on occupational safety and health issues at sixty workplaces through a campaign against psychosocial hazards.

In Namibia MANWU plans to raise awareness of occupational safety and health issues in the workplace highlighting the important contribution unions make to the prevention of accidents and ill health at work.

In Mozambique SINTAF and SINTICIM plan to raise awareness of occupational safety and health issues in the workplace highlighting the important contribution unions make to the prevention of accidents and ill health at work.

In Zambia NUBEGW  plans to raise awareness of occupational safety and health issues in the workplace highlighting the important contribution unions make to the prevention of accidents and ill health at work.
