Mauritius: CMWEU activities for 28 April

Construction union and BWI affiliate Construction, Metal and Employees Union (CMWEU) has announced its plans to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day.

The union’s plan is to “Sensitise the workers on difference between general checkup and work related medical checkup and what protection exist in the law.

“Acquire expert support, Occupational Health Physician to educate workers on Occupational diseases and long-term effects on the livelihood of the worker.”

And “Visibility actions to educate workers on ‘UNIONS MAKE SAFE WORK’”

The activity will take place in Rose Hill – Mauritius . It is targeted at CMWEU Unions leaders, OHS committee members, government and the public and it is hoped the outcome will be that “Workers become fully aware of the occupational diseases and long-term effects and how best to prevent from such. Distribution of pamphlets and other printed materials on work sites and sensitization campaign through meeting on work sites.”

Wales TUC to produce a short film highlighting the effectiveness of safety reps

Wales TUC is to produce a short  animation for Workers’ Memorial Day, 28 April. The union body will be launching it digitally, along with a pre-recorded item from the First Minister. The animation will focus on the difference that health and safety reps can make at work.

Canada: Nova Scotia activities for 28 April

Nova Scotia Federation of Labour is marking 28 April with three events:

“Every year on April 28 we pay our respects to, and remember, the thousands of workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents.

“We also honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies.

“Every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each work day.

“By working together – with employers, workers and our health and safety partners – we can prevent worker injuries and deaths before they occur.

“In 2017, 21 workers lost their lives due to workplace accidents/illness.

“You can attend this year’s ceremonies at the following locations:

Construction unions in Turkey to mark 28 April

Global construction union Building and Wood Worker’s International (BWI) affiliates in Turkey have reported several activities to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day:

  • YOL-IS will gather in front of the union building and issue a press release.
  • TARIM ORMAN-IS – will gather forest workers in the field and issue a press release.
  • AGAC-IS – the union will have its branch congress, where the President will make a speech regarding the IWMD.

The Central Organisation of Trade Unions, (KENYA) is planning to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day in Machakos County where a number of activities are planned.

COTU is using the ITUC 28 April resources in developing these activities.
