Over thirty BWI affiliate unions in Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Argentina, Venezuela, Ecuador, Jamaica, Curazao, Bermuda, Colombia, Peru and Brazil plan meetings with workers in workplace, OHS Talks in workplaces, virtual or face-to-face OHS-related trainings, public statements issued, national or sectoral mobilisations and the creation of campaign materials.
Global building unions’ federation BWI has announced the 28 April plans of affiliates in three South American countries: Panama, Argentina and Brazil.
SUNTRACS, UOCRA and SINTICOM Campinas will be producing promotional videos from unions leaders of work safety with Workers’ Memorial Day messages.

As you would be aware, International Workers’ Memorial Day takes place annually around the world on 28 April – it is an international day of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work.
This year, Trades and Labour Councils (TLCs) will be holding a mixture of in-person and live-streamed events.

Global building unions’ federation BWI has announced the 28 April plans of a Gabon affiliate.
The Union des Travailleurs du Bâtiment Travaux Publics – Bois Sciage et Placage (UTB TP BSP) will run a campaign to recognise occupational health and safety as a fundamental right for workers.

National Union of Construction and Civil Works of Senegal (SNTC/BTP) will conduct workplace campaigns to promote occupational safety in the small and middle enterprises to create awareness of workplace safety issues.

Lagos – Nigeria. The National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture & Wood Workers (NUCECFWW) will hold a national protest action against building collapses in Nigeria; the aim is to raise awareness in employers and the public of the need to respect construction and worker safety regulations in a bid to to end building collapses in Nigeria
Abuja – Nigeria. The Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association (CCESSA) will run an awareness campaign on the risks of asbestos in the workplace and also to publicise methods of prevention.

To mark the day in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – the building, construction, wood and forestry unions of Burkina Faso (FTBBF, FNTCS and SNTBB ) will campaign on OHS issue in Cement Companies to create awareness on OHS issue at work place and how to prevent risk for sub-contracting workers.
Global building unions’ federation BWI has announced the 28 April plans of its Ghanaian affiliate Timber and Woodworkers’ Union (TWU).
TWU will hold a workplace Work place greening and tree plantation ceremony to Commemorate IWMD in Kokuago Brang Ahofo Region, Wiawso, Ghana . TWU will distribute at least 2,000 posters fliers, letters, etc. to workplaces to raise both employer and employee awareness of workers safety.
TWU will also ensure at least three signatures of the BWI OHS Declaration that work safety be considered a fundamental human right.
Global building unions’ federation BWI has announced the 28 April plans of its Ghana affiliates.
Construction and Building Material Workers’ union (CBMWU) , General Construction Mining and Quarry Workers Union (GCMQWU), Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) and Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) will hold a joint safety inspection.
The inspection will be at company level and will include the signature of the BWI OHS Declaration with employers : “To promote OHS and evaluate the impact of OHS campaigns in the Construction sector and to also sign the BWI declaration that worker safety be a fundamental right for the workers at workplace.”
Global building unions’ federation BWI has announced the 28 April plans of its Malaysia affiliates.
Malaysian BWI affiliates and partner coalitions (Labour Law Reform Coalition) will present a Research Report on “Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration Failures” with a soft launch event on 28 April. The aim of the report is:
1. To highlight the severity of occupational hazards, injuries and deaths in varying sectors and their links to forced labour in Malaysia.
2. To highlight why relevant regulations must be treated as a priority by the Malaysian administration in the ‘new normal’.
3. To investigate existing policy measures/programmes in Malaysia and identify how they can be improved, as well as provide recommendations on bettering the status of workers in
Malaysia based on collected data.
