Albania: 28 April – World Day of Safety and Health at Work – KSSH- CTUA

The Confederation of Trade Unions of Albania (KSSH- CTUA) has announced plans for International Workers’ Memorial Day:
In preparation for this day, on April 26 at 10:00 a.m., on Friday at the Tirana International Hotel, the National Conference is organized with the participation of all members of its General Assembly and leaders and activists of all levels and professions.
Every day, more and more jobs and workers are being threatened by climate change and biological hazards. These phenomena are seriously endangering the health of workers and endangering jobs every day.
The workers of various chemical industries, manufacturing and trading of industrial products, agriculture, fishing, animal husbandry, construction, transport and telecommunications, postal deliveries, delivery, are exposed and threatened not only by biological risks and heat but also from storms, hurricanes, floods, storms, lightning, tornadoes, fires, and strong winds are a permanent risk for workplaces and for the health and safety of workers.
It is therefore necessary and imperative for Unions to demand stronger and safer policies and practices to protect workers from the dangerous impacts of climate and biological change.

Indonesia: SERBUK Indonesia will hold workshops, commemorations, actions, discussions and more to mark 28 April

Serbuk Indonesia - Berani Berjuang Pasti Menang!

SERBUK is conducting a vast number of activities in coordination with multiple unions and federations including:

  • Indonesian National Labor Law Discussion (Sub Cluster- OSH Fundamental Rights) – held jointly with the GUIN (Global Unions Indonesia Network)// (ITUC and GUF Indonesia) – Jakarta/Ashley Ashley Jakarata
  • IWMD activities in 5 SERBUK affiliated local unions (discussions, meetings, group photos) in the cities of Karawang, Yogyakarta, Magelang, Banyuwangi)
  • National Action commemorating IWMD in Jakarta with KPBI (Confederation)
  • SERBUK will hold a national workshop related to Just Transition and OHS issues with affiliates ITF, IndustriAll, IUF, BWI, IFJ, PSI in Tangerang Indonesia.
  • SERBUK initiated the IWMD commemoration together with affiliates ITF, IndustriAll, IUF, BWI, IFJ, PSI in Tangerang Indonesia. The commemoration entitled “You Are Our Heroes” is intended to commemorate union activities in Indonesia that have passed away.
  • KPBI (Confederation of SERBUK affiliates and networks in West Java Indonesia) took action against the local government and held hearings urging the local government to revise “regional regulations” (in Indonesia we call them PERDA) to accommodate the OSH issue. This action is also a warm-up action for IWMD/May Day

 

Italy: CGIL and UIL hold national strike protesting deaths at work

In Italy BWI affiliates Cgil and UIL held a national strike on 11 April  against deaths at work. The action lasted four hours for all private sectors and eight hours for construction workers. Zero deaths at work, a fair tax reform and a new social business model were the three objectives on which the strike is based.

Tanzania: Social media is central to TAMICO’s 28 April safety awareness campaign

Tanzanian construction union TAMICO  union will use social media and face-to-face engagement to push a 28 April safety awareness campaign.

Rwanda: Broad variety of actions to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day

RWANDA EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRY WORKERS UNION

Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers’ Union (REWU) is holding a broad variety of actions to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day that include:

  • REWU will conduct a workshop and training on safety hazard identification and injury prevention. The union will also conduct awareness campaigns using social and local media.
  • The union will launch a public awareness campaign at an organized company highlighting the need for improved safety conditions.
  • The union will advocate for stronger enforcement of OHS laws and regulations at the Ministry of Labour office and other relevant organizations.
  • A momemnt of silence will be observed across 28 organized companies in Rwanda.

Kenya: Construction union KUPRIPUPA will be organising, recruiting, informing and commemorating for 28 April

Kenya construction union KUPRIPUPA will work to  raise awareness of workplace hazards and their effects to members; plant trees in commemoration of IWMD; and lastly, recruit and organise workers around the importance of understanding, preserving, and pushing for improved occupational health and safety conditions in the workplace.

Zimbabwe: Cement and lime workers mark 28 April in three workplaces

Zimbabwe BWI affiliate Cement & Lime and Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CLAWUZ) will conduct educational  occupational safety and health workplace visits at three workplaces. Representatives from the employers, the union, occupational safety and health committees, and workers are expected to be in attendance.

Zambia: Building workers raise safety awareness on Workers’ Memorial Day

National Union of Building, Engineering and General Workers (NUBEGW)  will conduct actions at five organised workplaces. Activities include a meeting with an employer, march on an employer’s premises, and awareness campaigns at two other workplaces.

 

Zimbabwe: Meetings and site visit to mark 28 April – ZCATWU

In Zimbabwe, ZCATWU (Zimbabwe Construction and Allied Trades Union) has reported that: “Employer and members will attend a short site visit and convene a meeting on the importance and adherence to OHS regulations at the workplace. The union will educate attendees on mitigation and control measures, legal requirements, and seek to negotiate priority OHS proposals with the employer.”

Ukraine: The construction workers’ union of Ukraine will mark 28 April with training and resources – PROFBUD

The construction workers’ union of Ukraine, PROFBUD, will mark International Workers’ Memorial Day in Ukraine with asbestos awareness training. PROFBUD has also announced BWI 28 April materials and booklets will be translated translated into Ukrainian.
