{"id":6708,"date":"2024-04-21T13:40:08","date_gmt":"2024-04-21T13:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/28april.org\/?p=6708"},"modified":"2025-05-13T16:21:17","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T15:21:17","slug":"global-international-workers-memorial-day-2024-action-for-climate-related-workplace-hazards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/28april.org\/?p=6708","title":{"rendered":"Global: International Workers\u2019 Memorial Day 2024: Action for climate-related workplace hazards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"media\">\n<div class=\"chapo\">\n<p>This\u00a0<a class=\"spip_out\" href=\"https:\/\/28april.org\/\" rel=\"external\">International Workers\u2019 Memorial Day<\/a>, 28 April, trade unions are demanding urgent action to tackle \u2019Climate Risks for Workers\u2019 \u2013 the escalating dangers posed by the climate crisis to workers globally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"postmeta\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-xs-8 col-sm-10\">\n<div class=\"tags\">\n<ul class=\"inline\">\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ituc-csi.org\/ohs\">Health &amp; safety\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ituc-csi.org\/climate\">Climate\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ituc-csi.org\/international-workers-memorial-day-669\">International Workers\u2019 Memorial Day<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"main\">\n<div class=\"texte entry-content\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Da0HSiPj92w\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>There is an urgent need for emergency preparedness to be integrated into workplace safety policies, in democratic consultation with workers\u2019 trade unions.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"spip_out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/02-12-2023-over-40-million-health-professionals-demand-bold-health-and-climate-action-at-cop28#:~:text=%22This%20inspires%20us%20all%20to,losses%20and%20heightened%20air%20pollution.\" rel=\"external\">statement in December 2023<\/a>\u00a0highlighted an alarming surge in climate-related disasters, underlining the grave implications for workers\u2019 health and job security.<\/p>\n<p>Workers in agriculture, construction, postal delivery and other sectors have been particularly affected, with a marked increase in heat-related illnesses and fatalities. The threat is not just from heat; storms, hurricanes, floods, blizzards, lightning, tornadoes, wildfires and strong winds are a growing danger to the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle stated: \u201cThe climate crisis is no longer a distant threat; it\u2019s a present danger to workers around the globe. It\u2019s imperative that we demand robust policies and practices to protect our working people from the hazardous impacts of climate change. Our call to action is clear: we must integrate climate risk assessments and emergency preparedness into our occupational safety and health standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around the world, trade unions are already succeeding in winning protections for climate-related workplace hazards:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"spip\">\n<li>\u00a0In Phoenix, USA, a campaign by the unions Unite Here and the SEIU won a new law requiring contractors to provide heat safety protections for outdoor workers.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Firefighters in Spain won recognition that carcinogenic smoke from wildfires is an occupational health risk and they have the right to protection from it.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In the Democratic Republic of Congo, several unions have united to create a set of demands for workers in the critical mineral mining industry who are exposed to dangerous working conditions inside and outside.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In Australia, the CFMEU is actively winning changes to legislation and regulation to protect workers exposed to heat stress.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In Brazil, SITICOP is working to expand protections to workers affected by environmental disasters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Luc Triangle concluded: \u201cThe work by these trade unions, and many others, is inspiring. We need immediate action from governments, employers and regulatory bodies to address the current and growing threat of climate change to workers\u2019 health and safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes consultation with unions, the implementation of comprehensive safety training and enforcement of stringent safety standards to mitigate the risks associated with extreme weather conditions. At the heart of this is democracy, because democracy in the workplace means that workers are listened to, and they can play a part in their own safety.
